The underlying premise seems odd, but I think it’s a bad framing. Maki is a boy who comes from a broken home, he lacks friends and confidence. Umi is a girl who is constantly compared to her friend, and is often treated poorly as a result. The show explores a reoccurring theme of people holding their feelings in and not sharing burdens. It’s very cute, and has very touching emotional moments.
